The Ministry of Civil Defence says the earthquake which struck
Vanuatu is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat toNew Zealand .The quake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and comes only a week after a tsunami devastated areas of Samoa. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in
Hawaii has issued a warning for 11 countries.People in
New Caledonia on the eastern shore and on the Loyalty Islands are being evacuated to higher ground.A magnitude 6.7 earthquake also struck off the Philippines this morning but there are no reports of injuries or damages yet.
