Tsunami unlikely to pose threat to NZ

08/10/2009 12:20:01

The Ministry of Civil Defence says the earthquake which struck Vanuatu is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand.

The quake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and comes only a week after a tsunami devastated areas of Samoa. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii has issued a warning for 11 countries.

People in New Caledonia on the eastern shore and on the Loyalty Islands are being evacuated to higher ground.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake also struck off the Philippines this morning but there are no reports of injuries or damages yet.
