SamoaMass burial in Samoa today
09/10/2009 9:24:02
Preparations have started for today's mass burial in Samoa.
Around 60 bodies had been expected to be put in the grave, but the number has been reduced to ten.
TVNZ reporter Melissa Stokes says families have chosen to bury their own for various reasons, including the fact that some bodies needed to be put into the ground quickly. Some of the villagers also wanted their families buried close to their homes in the traditional way.
Vaosa Epa, CEO of the Office of the Prime Minister, says approximately 2,000 people are expected to attend the funeral service which she says is for all victims, including the foreign nationals who died.
The funeral was postponed for two days to allow time for relatives to arrive from New Zealand. It takes place at
Apia Park Stadium this afternoon.Related Stories
