The question comes up time and time again, "Is America really a Christian nation?" The answer to this simple question has undoubtedly sparked vigorous debate and has caused many people to contemplate America's purpose.

The Christian Colonies. Before the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, we know that there were thirteen original colonies. Many of these colonies drafted documents that would ultimately provide a foundation upon which the colonies would eventually build a government.

A New Nation Is Born. It is an undeniable fact that many of the early colonies drafted documents that explicitly reveal a motive for propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some of the colonies even required government officials to be Christian, while others sought to establish and build churches.

The Declaration of Independence specifically recognizes the existence of God, but not just any god. The recognition of the Christian God, as we are establishing, was not a matter that was concealed. The colonies expressed devout love and admiration for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and it was this adherence to the Christian faith that ultimately led to the rights set forth in the Declaration of Independence. It is not an accident that we read, "That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ..." The founding fathers recognized that they were created by the God of the Christian faith.

As time has marched forward, America has undergone "fundamental transformation." America was founded on the Judeo-Christian ethic, and we have had blessings unlike any other nation in the world. But what has happened to that Christian nation that started out with such a passion for Christ? What does it say when our own president declares the "America is not a Christian Nation"? How were so many moved by a promise of "Hope and Change", only to find two years later that "change" meant a further distancing from what the Founding Fathers set out to create.

There is separation of Church and State in America but more often than not it really means separation of Christianity and State, while politically correct politicians seek to appease those who practice other religions. What's needed are politicians who are strong in their faith and strong in the belief that the United States has enjoyed prosperity because of the principals that the Founding Fathers used as a basis for the creation of our great nation.

Is it too much to ask that our sitting president actually believe that this country is great and a beacon of light to shine on the world?
