IDF tells soldiers; Shoot at Gaza kidnappers, even if abductee is near

The commander of the Nahal Brigade, Col. Moti Baruch, told Haaretz in an interview to be published on Friday that he specifically instructs his soldiers, now deployed around the Gaza Strip, that if terrorists abduct a soldier, they should open fire, though this could put the Israeli soldier among the terrorists at risk. The Israel Defense Forces has been vacillating for nearly 20 years on the order that permits firing on a group of terrorists abducting an Israel Defense Forces soldier, even if the soldier might be hit. That directive was reiterated over the years to soldiers fighting in southern Lebanon - but when the army was asked about it officially, it usually avoided giving a direct response. The censor also intervened, and over the years media reports on the issue were quashed.

מפקד חטיבת הנח"ל, אלוף משנה מוטי ברוך, אומר שבמקרה של ניסיון חטיפה, הוא מורה בפירוש לחייליו לירות על חוליית המחבלים - גם במחיר סיכון חייו של החייל החטוף. בהתייחסו למציאות הנוכחית ברצועה, גם על רקע לקחי חטיפת גלעד שליט, אומר אל"מ ברוך בראיון ל"הארץ" שיתפרסם במלואו מחר, "מפקדים יכולים בהערכת מצב בזמן אמת לקבל החלטות אחרות, אבל מה שנדרש - זה למנוע את המחטף".
