The Dead Sea, one of the 28 official finalist candidates in the online global competition to rate the New7Wonders of Nature, is currently ranked among the Top 14, according to an announcement by the New7Wonders Foundation. The website, www.new7wonders.com, provides a live ranking of the current finalists, with colored arrows showing whether each finalist has moved up or down since the last grouped ranking.
The Dead Sea is ranked as one of the Top 14 Finalist Candidates, together with, in alphabetical order, the Amazon, Angel Falls, the Galapagos, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeita Grotto, the Maldives, Puerto Princesa, Uluru, Vesuvius, and Yushan.
Each Tuesday, a new ranking will be shown and, each week, different ranking criteria will be used. Information will be provided over the coming weeks on which sites have garnered the most votes from countries outside the site’s home country, which sites have progressed the fastest, and information on the voter profile by site.
Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov who heads the support committee for the Dead Sea on behalf of Israel, said: "We must not be apathetic, the competition has only just begun and there are two years ahead of us. We will continue to work to increase the votes for the Dead Sea, together with all the partners in this important project."

About 200 journalists, travel industry professionals and wholesalers from Europe and North America will participate this weekend (4-6 December) in three-day 7th annual Dead Sea International Marketing Weekend to promote tourism to the Dead Sea.
During the conference, which is a joint initiative of the Dead Sea Hotel Association, the Tamar Regional Council, El Al and the Tourism Ministry, will focus on the Dead Sea’s candidacy in the finals of the online New 7 Wonders of Nature competition and on the unique production of Verdi's Nabucco, to be performed by the Israel Opera at the foot of Masada in June 2010.
The travel industry professionals will meet with their Israeli counterparts in order to promote joint cooperation and establish new contacts. The conference participants will tour the Dead Sea region, Masada and Nahal David and they will be introduced to the Dead Sea as a unique tourism product that includes spa, beauty and health treatments and as a venue for entertainment and cultural productions. After the conference, the journalists, guests of the Tourism Ministry, will also tour the North of Israel, the Sea of Galilee region and Tel Aviv.
Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov: "During 2009-2010, the Tourism Ministry will invest 500 million shekel in promoting Israel, with a significant amount reserved for promoting the Dead Sea as an important brand in Israel tourism. The conference, with the participation of key journalists and travel industry professionals, is of great importance in promoting tourism to Israel in general and to the Dead Sea region, with its unique properties, sites and stunning landscapes in particular."
Mayor of the Tamar Regional Council Dov Litvinoff: "The candidacy of the Dead Sea as a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition is an important milestone in making Israel into a tourism destination and in the international recognition that the Dead Sea will receive as a natural treasure that has no equal in the world."
