"WE ARE UNARMED AND WE ARE SAILING"

For Immediate Release: May 31, 2011

On Anniversary of Mavi Marmara Killings, U.S. Boat to Gaza Announces Passenger List

New York, NY - May 31, 2011. Organizers of the U.S. Boat to Gaza announced today that they expect some 50 people will be aboard The Audacity of Hope when it joins the second "freedom flotilla" in late June to break the siege of Gaza.

The announcement came on the year's anniversary of the 2010 Israeli attack on unarmed passengers aboard the Mavi Marmara, killing nine, including an 18-year old U.S. citizen of Turkish descent.

Leslie Cagan, coordinator of the U.S. Boat to Gaza, said, "We are sailing-despite threats by the Israeli armed forces to use attack dogs and snipers against us-and despite frantic diplomatic pressure by the Israeli government to prevent other countries from allowing the flotilla to sail." She commented that while Egypt has just opened the Rafah border to Gaza, the maritime blockade and the Israeli siege of Gaza still exist.

U.S. BOAT, THE AUDACITY OF HOPE, SET TO SAIL TO GAZA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 13, 2011

PRESS CONTACT: FELICE GELMAN, (917) 912-2597

New York, May 13 -- The US Boat to Gaza campaign announced today that it will send a US flagged boat, The Audacity of Hope, to Gaza in late June as part of the International Freedom Flotilla II. The passengers on the boat, which will sail from a port in the Mediterranean, are US citizens from many different backgrounds, ages, and communities across the United States.

Flotilla organizer Jane Hirschmann said, "The Israeli blockade of Gaza is a clear violation of international human rights and maritime law. 1.5 million people in Gaza have been effectively imprisoned for five years. The blockade is maintained only with the support of the United States government. That is why it is imperative that it be confronted nonviolently by American citizens."

Why they go: Freedom riders then and now

    By Hannah Schwarzschild

Fifty years ago next month, my father, then a 35-year-old refugee from Hitler’s Germany with a young wife and two small children at home, boarded a Trailways bus headed for Jackson, Mississippi.

Like the 427 other freedom riders who rode voluntarily into the terror that was the segregated South in May and June of 1961, my father set out to violate the illegal state laws that barred white-skinned people from sitting together with black-skinned people on public transit – laws that were vigorously enforced not only by police but also by the Ku Klux Klan and the White Citizens’ Council. Only weeks before, a mob of angry segregationists in Anniston, Alabama had attacked and set fire to a bus with dozens of black and white freedom riders trapped inside.

"This is the Freedom Ride of this era"

Fifty years ago, on May 4, 1961, the first bus of the Freedom Rides left Washington D.C. headed to New Orleans, with people committed to challenging segregation. The Freedom Rides were one of the sparks that contributed to a movement to dismantle a degrading system that violated human rights.

In an interview with organizers from The U.S. Boat to Gaza, Alice Walker, one of our nation's foremost contemporary writers and the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize, likened the planned Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza to the Freedom Rides by saying "this is the Freedom Ride of this era." In the U.S. the racist system of segregation was challenged; in South Africa the racist system of apartheid was challenged; in Palestine the racist system of occupation and apartheid, enforced by the Israeli government and supported by the U.S government, is being challenged and will come to an end.
