Obama: Israel should sign NPT
American president lauds leaders who took part in Washington nuke summit, says world safer as result of conference; responding to question, Obama says all nations should sign Non-Proliferation Treaty, including Israel

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the US Administration calls upon all nations to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, including Israel.
Speaking at a press conference end of a nuclear summit in Washington, Obama said that the world was safer today as result of the convention's achievements.
“We have seized the opportunity,” Obama said at the conclusion of a two-day summit on nuclear security in Washington. “The American people will be safer and the world will be more secure.”
When asked about Israel's nuclear program, Obama at first refused to address the issue, instead insisting to talk about the US and its commitment to reducing American nuclear weapon stockpiles.
"Initially you were talking about US behavior, and then suddenly we're talking about Israel. Let me talk about the United States," the president said. "I do think that as part of the NPT, our obligation, as the largest nuclear power in the world, is to take steps to reducing our nuclear stockpile. And that's what the START treaty was about, sending a message that we are going to meet our obligations…as far as Israel goes, I'm not going to comment on their program.
However, although initially saying he will not address Israel's nuclear program, Obama continued, pointing out that the US is calling on all nations to sign the NPT.
"What I'm going to point to is the fact that consistently we have urged all countries to become members of the NPT. So there's no contradiction there," he said. "And so whether we're talking about Israel or any other country, we think that becoming part of the NPT is important. And that, by the way, is not a new position. That's been a consistent position of the
United States government , even prior to my administration.

Palestinian Muslims SacrificeConjoined Twins for Anti-Israel PropagandaThe late Israeli Prime Minister
Golda Meir once said, “Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.”
![]()
Rather Than Accept Jewish Help,
Palestinian Muslims Let Twins Die for Propaganda Against Israel
But, as the latest incident with a pair of now-dead Palestinian conjoined twins shows, it’ll be a
cold day in hell before that happens. And the twin girls–Ritaj and Rittal–are yet another example of, “When bad things happen, blame the Jews.”Palestinian politicians and parents let the conjoined twins die rather than accept offers of help from Israel. The
Palestinians , instead, preferred to use these young, innocent babies as yet another disposable prop–another political football–against Israel and the Jewish people. And to some extent it worked. Associated Press fell for it. But now the twins are dead. Here’s the story: two weeks ago, conjoined twins were born in Gaza. They did not have much chance for survival unless they were separated and treated because they were born suffering from a bacterial
chest infection , and their hearts, livers and digestive tracks worked in tandem. As you may know, Israel has some of the best doctors and most advanced medicine in the world. The Israelis–as is their humane and generous practice with even Islamic terrorists who try to blow them up–offered to treat the twins. If anyone would be able to successfully surgically detach them and/or treat the twins’ condition, it would be the Israelis. But the hatred of Gaza politicians was so great, the offer was quickly and steadfastly refused. Of course, you don’t read about the offer. Instead, AP snorts that the twins were flown to Saudi Arabia, after they “overcame immense obstacles to make it out of the Gaza Strip including an Israeli blockade.” This is a lie. Israel NEVER blocked the twin babies from going anywhere. HAMAS and Fatah did.
And instead of going to Israel for the best possible treatment and the most likely chance for survival, the twins flew to that great medical bastion of . . . Saudi Arabia?! Um, there’s a reason the Saudi princes and sheikhs come to America for medical treatment. Their own native medical facilities stink, and they wouldn’t be caught dead in Israel.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah paid for the twins’ operation and chartered a plane to fly them to Riyadh. But that’s not before HAMAS and the Abbas Fatah Palestinian factions fought over the whole thing and delayed the trip. And once they got to the Kingdom, Saudi doctors said the operation would be impossible because they claimed the twins’ organs were too damaged and their health had degenerated to such a critical condition. The twins died there, at the King Abdulaziz Medical City, on Saturday.
Had the Palestinian Muslim parents of the twins loved their kids more than they loved hating Israel, their two kids might be alive and healing today. But this is the kind of people Israel–and all of us–are dealing with. Muslims care more about destroying all that is not Muslim. And they’re willing to sacrifice their own children–like ragdolls to throw in the dumpster–to get it. (And, hey, they were girls, so their lives were even more worthless in the eyes of their barbarian people.)
And you wonder why there is no peace in the Middle East. I don’t wonder. It’s pretty clear why not.

Debbie, They don’t have the high regard for human life as the Jews do and they hate the Jews more than they love their own children. Their own children pay dearly for it. Until they change that, peace is never going to come to the Middle East.

Debbie, I’m not a regular reader of your site, but was appalled by this in this article, but hadn’t heard some of these details. As for the Israeli’s treating Palestinian kids (and many others), I have some personal experience with it, both as a reporter here, and as a father:
http://betbender.blogspot.com/2008_03_03_archive.html[snip]
“The bombardee would be Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, a few miles up the coast from the Gaza Strip. The same one Gaza Palestinians are blowing holes in with Iranian-made Grad/Katyusha rockets. The same one that Palestinian premature twins are being kept alive in and cared for, while rockets hammer into the walls above, wounding patients and civilians.
This care isn’t a hospital public relations department stunt, but rather a daily, telling occurrence throughout Israel. And a potent measure of the goodwill, health, and tempered resilience of Israeli society.
And I can personally vouch for it:
Both staff and patients at the
Jerusalem hospital where my three children were born was made up of Israelis, Jews and Arabs (Palestinian Jerusalem ID card-holders, to the best of my knowledge).Another family member was also successfully treated a few years ago by a similar staff makeup at the city’s Hadassah Hospital, in their state-of-the-art pediatric
cancer ward and outpatient clinic. Many of the patients I and family interacted with at the clinic during her course of treatment werePalestinians from Jerusalem, Ramallah and area villages. On one day’s chemotherapy session, I had my camera with me and recorded this:…”

Atleast now the children are at peace, had they been cured and cared for allowed to grow to their majority only to become another suicide bomber years from now to further the muslim cause.

Mozlums and lives/health are an impossible combination. They neither live nor let live. When they have no regard for their mozzie lives (honor killing, other variants) would they think twice before taking lives of infidels for their “cause”?

“The Israelis–as is their humane and generous practice with even Islamic terrorist who try to blow them up–offered to treat the twins. If anyone would be able to successfully surgically detach them and/or treat the twins’ condition, it would be the Israelis.”
Indeed, in recent years Hadassa Hospital in Jerusalem has been repeatedly nominated for the
Nobel Peace Prize because they are an island of caring and mutual respect. They treat everyone, have a staff composed of Jews, Christian and Muslim Arabs, including Palestinians from the territories who come to learn and practice. But no, the prize goes to losers and frauds like the IAEA andel Baradei , Al Gore and the IPCC, andObama (ten days in office by nomination date). And Israel’s medical teams don’t just serve locally. We saw them in action in
Haiti , but their teams frequently make the rounds inAfrica and Asia. Only a few months back a team of eye surgeons was in Vietnam, sharing their expertise and saving the sights of many.Raymond in DC on April 12, 2010 at 4:34 pm
The deep hatred in the
Arab world for the Jews is so evil, twisted and tragic. Unfortunately, had the surgery been done in Israel, and the babies would not have survived the operation, then the Arab media would have accused Israel of killing them for their “organs” or something like that. You can’t win with them. The thought of Israel splitting their tiny speck of a country in two (a mere dot on a map in the middle east surrounded by vast amounts of Arab land), to share it with people with this kind of pathology is truly frightening and suicidal. The thought of the US government pressuring Israel to go ahead with this nonsense, fills me with sadness about the lack of moral clarity in our current leadership. May God help us!rebecca on April 12, 2010 at 5:41 pm
The Arab fanatics’ (excuse the duplication) attitude is the same as that of their totalitarian mentor Hitler. He was more concerned about the Holocaust than he was about the German economy or even the German war effort. Just like the North Koreans are more concerned about their nuclear effort than about the welfare of their people. This is how subhuman totalitarians think; the liberal nitwits don’t understand this; if they ever do, they become conservatives.

From the histories that I have been taught or have read for myself, I have to conclude that the Muslims have wanted to erradicate the Jews for two thousand years or more.
What always amazes me is that some
American President thinks that he can come along and broker a peace between them after a few talks. That the Palestine people would allow, if not outright cause, the two innocent children to die, rather than accept the help of the Israelies, surprises me not. It is but one more symptom of the problems between them, and goes to help illustrate the depth of the hatred.
So very sad.

The best "MIMUNA" ever !
One little house - Latma's Passover musical treat and Judy Miller's venture into the Israeli media swamp
April 7, 2010, 6:44 PM
Comments (8) | | Dear Friends,
Here is a musical special from the crew at Latma, specially translated into English. The song is a current take on the Passover song Had Gadya - One little goat. Ours is called "Had Bayta," or one little house. Editing note: the first photo you see in the video is the face of Yariv Oppenheimer, Peace Now's executive director. The best "MIMUNA" ever !
Latma's voice in the media is more important now than ever before. Events in the past week make this clear. For the past 4 months, a radical anti-Zionist activist named Anat Kamm has been under house arrest suspected of serious acts of treason. It is alleged that during her service in the IDF, Kamm transferred up to a thousand classified documents to unauthorized sources outside of the IDF. Among the documents she allegedly transferred were operational plans for dealing with three senior terror masters from theIslamic Jihad terror group in Judea and Samaria. Kamm allegedly transferred the documents to Ha'aretz newspaper. Ha'aretz published the documents. After her release from military service, Kamm was hired as a journalist by Ha'aretz'sweb portal Walla. In its effort to prevent Kamm from hampering the investigation against her, the state prosecution asked and received a gag order on the fact of the investigation against her and the fact that there was a gag order placed on the investigation -- that is, a total news blackout. To get ahead of the story before it comes out that it hired an alleged traitor that it allegedly collaborated with, Ha'aretz turned to foreign journalists and claimed that Israel is "disappearing" journalists. The foreign press, and most destructively, Judith Miller swallowed the tale whole. Miller wrote up the story on the Daily Beast and then had this interview with Shepherd Smith -- who apparently really doesn't have much use for Israel or Jewish Americans who support Israel -- yesterday on Fox News. What this story shows is how destructive the Israeli media's contempt for their own country can be for Israel not only at home, but abroad as well. The need to expose what the Israeli media is doing is absolutely essential if Israel's elected leadership is to have the ability to protect the country from the likes ofIran and its terror proxies. If this sort of thing continues uncontested, the Netanyahu government today and any subsequent government that tries to defend the country will be stymied by a local and international media climate that will simply paralyze them by attacking everything they do.With Kamm we see Israel's state prosecution trying to investigate and try an alleged traitor and for its efforts, its members, as well as the poor judge who issued the gag order, are accused of being totalitarian oppressors and the likes of Sheperd Smith are given a chance to strut their anti-Semitic stuff.Thankfully, through the generous efforts of readers like you, Latma's message is catching on. Our videos are being watched by tens of thousands of people, our team members are being interviewed almost daily on television and radio, and our blog posts are being circulated throughout the Israeli blogosphere.I promise not to make this pitch every week, but I happen to be in Washington this week and seeing the impact of the Israeli media's shenanigans on the US media coverage of Israel has reinforced my belief in the necessity of Latma and the urgency of our mission. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me.All the best and enjoy the video. It's gone viral in Israel and I think it is a work of genius. I can say that, because all I did was cheer on the team.Best,CarolinePosted on April 7, 2010

King orders separation of conjoined Gaza twinsBy ARAB NEWS
Published: , 2010
RIYADH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has ordered treatment and surgery for the separation of Palestinian Retag bint Yasser Abu Assi and Rittal bint Yasser.
The birth of the twin babies in Khan Yunis recently is the first of its kind in the occupied territory and the hospitals there are ill-equipped to handle the situation, which is due in large part to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip that prevents the free import of medical and food supplies to the walled-off, densely populated territory.
The babies will be brought from Gaza Strip to the National Guard‘s King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency on Friday.
Al-Rabeeah thanked the king for the keen interest taken in this .

I will pray that all goes well for the twins. Your King blesses the world with his wisdom, and generosity. I am pleased! I continue to pray for all Arab nations, especially Arabia, Palestine, and Jordan.

Why don't they go to Israel to do the separation? Israel performs the most serious medical operations for Palestinians, like the Save a Child's Heart program. The best aid for them is also the closest. I'm sorry to say that chances are much more likely the twins will survive if the operation is done in Israel.
Michael Apr 4, 2010 15:57
Yes, they should have gone to Israel. I'm sure that they would have received much better care and their chances for survival would be much high. I'm sure Israel's medical care is vastly superior to all Arab countries.
Conjoined Gaza twins arrive in Saudi for surgery
First known pair of Palestinian conjoined twins arrives in Saudi Arabia for separation surgery 10 days after birth. Operation to be funded by Saud King Abdullah
Associated Press
Published: 04.06.10, 19:12 / Israel News The first known pair of Palestinian conjoined twins arrived in Saudi Arabia Tuesday for separation surgery 10 days after their birth, overcoming a particularly Gazan string of obstacles including a blockade, squabbling governments and even holidays.
In the end, on Tuesday, Egyptian authorities authorized a rare opening of the country's Rafah crossing with Egypt so the girls, their parents and a medical team could cross. From northern Sinai, a special Saudi medical plane whisked them off to Saudi Arabia, where Saudi King Abdullah will foot the bill for their operation.
Khaled al-Marghalani of the Saudi Health Ministry confirmed the twins had arrived and were on their way to the National Guard Hospital in the capital Riyadh.
The two girls, Rital and Ritaj, were born in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis on March 27, joined at the chest and sharing small intestines. Each girl has her own heart, lungs and other organs, increasing chances they'll be able to survive separately, said doctor Ayman Abu Amouna, who oversaw their care in Gaza.
TV footage of the twins in the Gaza hospital shows them sleeping face to face, each in her own diaper, one with an arm around the other's body.
Rital and Ritaj, to undergo separation surgery
Mohammed al-Kashif of Hamas Health Ministry in Gaza said the girl's birth sparked curiosity across Gaza and that doctors from around the territory came to examine the rare condition they had read about in textbooks but never seen.Al-Kashif said the girls were the first conjoined twins on record in the Palestinian territories. Spokesman Omar Nasser for the Palestinian Authority's Health Ministry in the West Bank concurred.
Rival Palestinian governments have ruled the two territories since the Islamic militant Hamas seized Gaza from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, leaving him in control only of the West Bank. Attempts at reconciliation have failed.
Israel and Egypt imposed a strict blockade Gaza after the Hamas takeover, harming the territory's health services and making it hard for patients to travel for treatment. Israel says it lets sufficient humanitarian products, including medical supplies, into the territory.
Kashif said Gaza's Health Ministry asked the Saudi Embassy in Egypt to facilitate the twins' travel. The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank issued passports for the girls and their father on Saturday but couldn't send them to Gaza, because Israel was observing the last Sabbath of the Passover holiday and offices were closed, said Health Ministry spokesman Omar Nasser.
The West Bank and Gaza lie on opposite sides of Israel.
The passports reached Gaza on Sunday, but the family couldn't travel on Monday because of a holiday in Egypt, Nasser said.
Further complications arose because Egypt has minimal contact with the Hamas government in Gaza, preferring to deal with the Palestinian Authority.
On Tuesday, following Saudi intervention, Hamas facilitated the twins' transfer to the border, which Egypt opened especially so they could cross.
Tuesday afternoon, they boarded a special medical plane chartered by Saudi King Abdullah. In Saudi Arabia, chief surgeon and Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabia will perform the surgery, paid for by the king, said Ahmad Mohammed al-Sedairi, Saudi ambassador to Egypt.
Gaza conjoined twins die in Saudi
Apr 10, 2010 at 20:02RIYADH - Two-week old conjoined twins born in the Gaza strip died in Riyadh on Saturday after doctors said their condition was too delicate to operate, a Saudi official said.
Frail health and bacterial infection killed Ritaj and Rittal Abu Assi, Health Minister Dr Abdullah al-Rabeeah announced in a statement published by the official SPA news agency.
The twins were born in Khan Yunis on March 27 joined at the chest and sharing a defective heart and other organs.
They were sent to the King Abdulaziz Medical City's special conjoined twins centre on Tuesday for a possible separation operation.
But after examining the twins, doctors said a day later that their organs were too damaged and their health too critical to undertake the operation.

Arab Israeli singer receives threatsBy JPOST.COM STAFF
09/04/2010
Arab Israeli singer and television personality Mira Awad has withdrawn from the Zionist Federation’s Israel Independence Concert in London following death threats against her and her family, it was reported on Friday.
Awad, along with fellow singerAchinoam Nini , represented Israel at the 2009 Eurovision concert have performed at venues around the world to packed audiences. Awad has worked to promote coexistence between Arabs and Jews in Israel through her work with Nini, but also through various other platforms.
“Mira and [Nini’s] message is about finding a peaceful way forward. It is tragic that when both sides try to come together by any means possible to build a better future for Israel and its citizens, there are those prepared to use violence and intimidation to destroy it,” Awad’s manager, Ofer Pesenzon, said in response to the threats.
Awad will stay in Israel while Nini performs in London on Independence Day.
“Our concert is a celebration of independence but it’s also about building understanding. Mira wanted to be the Arab Israeli voice promoting a peaceful way forward,” said ZF executive-director Alan Aziz following Awad’s withdrawal from the concert line-up.
“The threats to her life expose the real truth behind the conflict - that everyone is hostage to extremism, and it is a dangerous and growing phenomenon that denies Israel’s right to exist, and the world’s right to democracy,” Aziz continued.
Awad grew up in Rameh, an Arab village near Karmiel, and lives today in Tel Aviv. Her family, which still lives in the Galilee, employs strict measures to ensure their security.

The Jews are a peculiar people
The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it.
Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchman.
Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese and no one says a word about refugees.
But in the case of Israel , the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees.
Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single one.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms.
But when Israel is victorious, it must sue for peace.
Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations, when they are defeated, survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed.
Had Nasser triumphed in June [1967], he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on.
There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Blacks are executed in Rhodesia .
But, when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one demonstrated against him.
The Swedes, who were ready to break off diplomatic relations with America because of what we did in Vietnam , did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews.
They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troops in Norway .
The Jews are alone in the world.
If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources.
Yet at this moment, Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally.
We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us.
And one has only to imagine what would have happened in the six day war [1967] had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war, to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us.
Should Israel perish, the Holocaust will be upon us all.

"Where are you, Anat Kam?"
Imagine that the US military ordered the arrest of the person who leaked the now-notorious video depicting US soldiers mowing down two Reuters journalists and a crowd of innocent Iraqis. Then imagine that a court then imposed a gag order forbidding all American reporters and bloggers from even mentioning the arrest of the leaker. What would the media blackout say about the state of American democracy?
Of course this hypothetical scenario would be unthinkable in a country like the US, which boasts a grand tradition of whisteblowing, and which has shield laws in 36 states. The reason I raised it was to highlight the outrageous nature of a gag order in Israel that has forbidden journalists and bloggers from reporting on the so-called Anat Kam affair. Who is Kam and why is speaking her name a crime in the Israeli media?
To make a long story shorter, Kam is a 23-year-old Israeli journalist who allegedly procured confidential documents while she worked in an Israeli Army general's office during her mandatory military service. The documents revealed that in 2007, Israeli Army forces assassinated a Palestinian Islamic Jihad member in direct contravention of a Supreme Court order that banned the killing of wanted militants if there was a reasonable chance to arrest them first. Two top Israeli military officials, former Central Command Chief Major General Yair Naveh, Operations Directorate Head Major General Tal Russo, and Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, who oversaw the Gaza assault of 2008 and 09, are said to have been incriminated in the documents.
Kam is believed to have photocopied the documents and passed them on to Uri Blau, a top national security reporter for the Israeli daily Haaretz (Haaretz's editor in chief has called any link between Kam and Blau "absurd," however). Blau proceeded to publish an article detailing the contents of the documents, provoking the ire of the Israeli military, which since 1988 has demanded that journalists submit all "material relevant to the security of the state" to the military censor for review, and which compels all journalists seeking an official Israeli press card (GPO card) to sign on to the censorship policy. By all accounts, Blau submitted his article for review to the censor and was cleared for publication.
Kam was detained last December and placed under house arrest. However, news of her arrest only began to seep out into the news in March. Kam now awaits trial for treason and espionage, charges that could land her in prison for as long as 14 years.
Meanwhile, Blau is hiding out in London. According to multiple sources, Blau is terrified to return to Israel. His hard-hitting reports on Israeli Army abuses in the occupied West Bank have made him the bane of the military establishment. "At least ten journalists inside Israel have told me [Blau] is the real target," a reporter working in Israel and Palestine told me. "And everyone is saying they're simply prosecuting Kam to make an example out of her."
Seeking to suppress discussion of the scandal, Israel's internal security service, Shin Bet, secured a gag order on the media from an apparent rubber stamp judge who had spent almost her entire career in military courts. The order, issued in January, forbade journalists and bloggers in Israel not only from reporting on the details of Kam's prosecution, but from even acknowledging that she had been detained. A reporter I spoke to was publishing stories on the scandal under an anonymous byline. The New York Times has done the same, meaning even Ethan Bronner might be afraid of the Shin Bet.
The gag order was leaked tonight on the blog of Richard Silverstein. According to Israel's Channel 10, its contents had been kept from secret at the personal insistence of Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin -- even the Speaker of the Knesset was not allowed to see it.
A friend has helped me translate the salient portions:
The order identifies Superintendent Saar Shapira as the police official who went to court to request it; the plan to arrest Kam is referred to as "Operation Double-Overtake." The most notable piece of information is that Israel's National and International Serious Crimes Unit spearheaded the investigation into Kam's conduct. The involvement of this unit, which in the past has gone after Israeli journalists for traveling to designated enemy nations like Syria, and therefore seems primarily concerned with crimes committed abroad, raises the question of whether Kam leaked documents to reporters besides Blau who work for international papers.
While American bloggers like Richard Silverstein have been reporting on the Kam affair for weeks, some Israeli bloggers have taken down their posts, fearing that they could harm Kam's defense -- and possibly place themselves in danger -- by provoking the Shin Bet and reactionary political elements. Kam's defense team has allegedly urged bloggers to take posts down in hopes of lessening her sentence. The fact that the contents of the gag order were not shown to anyone until tonight only added to the climate of confusion and fear.
There are exceptions to the blackout, however. The Israeli reporter Mya Guarneri has written about the Kam affair at The National, a foreign paper. And the scandal has received in-depth treatment from the Palestinian news service, Ma'an News, which recently lost a top editor, Jared Malsin (an American graduate of Yale University), when Israeli security services ordered his deportation on the grounds that he had published damaging reports about Israeli military conduct in the Occupied Territories. Besides a few vigilant Israeli bloggers, a Facebook page devoted to Kam's case is hosting what blogger Didi Remez calls "a de facto civil disobedience campaign."
Two major papers in Israel have tried to find their way around the gag order. Yedioth Ahronoth satirized the media blackout (I'm not sure if the satire was intentional), submitting Judith Miller's report about Kam to the military censor, then publishing a redacted version of the article (see it here). And Haaretz has run an interview with a former Supreme Court Justice, Dalia Dorner, who mocks the order as pointless in the age of the internet. "If the entire world knows about [the Kam affair]," Dorner said, "issuing a gag order is baseless." However, the article does not mention Kam directly or describe the details of her case.
While the media blackout casts the darkest shadow over Israel's already withered democratic institutions, Kam's prosecution for treason is nearly as disturbing. While she may be guilty of leaking confidential documents, she is only accused of malfeasance for exposing a much greater crime, an illegal assassination that appeared to have been authorized at the highest levels of the IDF general command. She is a whisteblower in the tradition of Mark Felt and Daniel Ellsberg. In Netanyahu's Israel, however, she is being treated as an enemy of the state.
If reporters can be prosecuted or intimidated by the state for exposing acts that the Israeli Supreme Court has declared illegal, then the court holds nothing more than symbolic authority. By voiding the rulings of the court without a second thought, Israel's military-intelligence apparatus has demonstrated the preeminence of its power. At the same time, its reliance on gag orders has revealed a growing sense of desperation. What else is the IDF hiding?

Olmert aide arrested in serious corruption affair
'One of the most serious affairs in State's history' said to involve tens of millions of shekels in bribes in exchange for advancing real estate projects. Five people arrested, including Attorney Uri Messer, former Jerusalem city engineer and businesspeople. Final decision on affair to be made by State Prosecutor Lador, as Attorney General Weinstein 'must avoid dealing with this case'

Latest Update: 04.07.10, 22:02 / Israel News The police's National Fraud Unit has uncovered a serious corruption affair, involving the Holyland real estate project in southwest Jerusalem and additional projects. The police and the court have defined the new scandal as "one of the most serious corruption affairs in the State's history."
Attorney Uri Messer, a former association of ex-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, was arrested Tuesday along with four other officials whose houses were searched by the police. Attorney Messer is currently serving as a witness for the prosecution in two of the affairs Olmert has been indicted for.
The Jerusalem District Court will discuss on Thursday a request made by Jerusalem District Prosecutor Eli Abarbanel to reverse the order of testimonies in the Olmert trial and to begin with the double-billing affair instead of the Investment Center and Talansky affairs. Abarbanel is expected to explain to the court the connection between the new affair and the former prime minister's trial.
State Prosecutor Moshe Lador will be making the decision in the affair, as Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein must avoid dealing with this case.
A senior official in the law enforcement system told Ynet on Wednesday, "Although Weinstein is familiar with the details, the final decision on the matter, once the affair reaches the State Prosecutor's Office, will be made by Lador and not by AG Weinstein, who must avoid making a decision on the matter."
The new investigation, dubbed "the Holyland affair", focuses on suspicions of bribery in exchange for advancing real estate projects in the capital, including the Holyland housing project in southwest Jerusalem, which has been referred to by some as an "ugly real estate monster", Including by the judge who extended the suspects' remand.
The affair is said to be unprecedented in terms of the amounts allegedly paid in bribes – tens of millions of shekels, the extent of time it lasted – from 1999 to 2007, and the volume of the projects involved – which are valued at billions of shekels.
The police's findings are based on a key witness who was involved in the Holyland project. A gag order has been placed on some of the details of the investigation.
The investigation focuses on the Holyland project, but it involves additional projects, including Manara Cliff in the Galilee panhandle, where there was a plan to build a housing project which has yet to be implemented, and projects of the Hazera company, which holds lands near the former Hiriya waste facility.
An attempt to build luxury apartments in the Hiriya area has been denied by planning officials, and has even resulted in bribery charges against Oded Tal, a former Israel Land Administration officials.
On Tuesday, the police raided the offices of the Polar company, which is a partner in the Holyland initiative and the owner of the Hazera company. It should be noted that Polar's owners have been replaced since the time the affair took place.
Police: Entire corruption system
In the past few days, under media blackout, the police arrested five people involved in the affair, including Attorney Uri Messer, former Jerusalem City Engineer Uri Shetrit, businessman Hilel Cherny, Jerusalem entrepreneur Meir Rabin and accountant Eliyahu Hasson.
The five are suspected of bribery, fraud and money laundering. The investigation is ongoing.
The police's National Fraud Unit raided the Jerusalem Municipality building on Tuesday and confiscated documents relevant for the investigation. The investigators coordinated their arrival with Mayor Nir Barkat, who gave his consent to the search.
The investigators searched several offices in the compound, reportedly focusing on the archives and taking documents from the municipal planning and construction office.
According to sources in the municipality, Barkat was informed that some of the workers would be taken in for questioning.

"It should be noted that in terms of the severity of the actions, this is one of the most serious affairs in the State's history," Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court President Judge Abraham Heiman ruled Tuesday during the suspects' remand hearing.
Superintendent Lior Rice revealed during the court hearing that the investigators had uncovered an entire system created to bribe senior officials in the public sectors in order to advance the interests of different companies involved in building projects.
Suspicions and method
The massive Holyland project in Jerusalem was launched in the 1990s, and the plan to build hundreds of housing units received the final approval in 1999. The key suspect in this affair is businessman Hilel Cherny, who owned the lands in the Holyland compound.
According to the suspicions, Cherny sought to increase the building rights in the area and paid a bribe of tens of millions of dollars to different people, including senior Jerusalem Municipality and Israel Land Administration officials.
Cherny is also the owner of the Manara Cliff project near Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel. According to the suspicions, in both projects he needed the authorities' help. He operated an entire system, including real estate entrepreneur Meir Rabin, in order to contact officials who would take the bribe.
According to the suspicions, Rabin served as a mediator on behalf of the land owners in their attempts to convince Jerusalem Municipality officials and the local planning and construction committee to advance the plan. Rabin was responsible for locating officials he believed would accept a bribe in exchange for supporting the Holyland project.
The "dirty work" of transferring the funds was done by Eliyahu Hasson, the Holyland company's accountant. He is suspected of disguising the funds given as a bribe to different municipality officials. The National Fraud Unit investigators found in his office documents showing that Hasson knew the funds were used to bribe decision makers. .
Attorney Messer, who was one of Olmert's closest friends for years, is said to have been involved in almost all the projects. He is suspected of mediating the bribes, money laundering and conspiring to commit a crime.
Messer said during the remand hearing, "I have a lot to say and I will say it once I am given the opportunity."
Another detainee is Uri Shetrit, who served as the Jerusalem city engineer from 2001 to 2006. According to the suspicions, at a certain stage he suddenly began advancing the Holyland project vigorously, after strongly objecting to it in the past.
According to the police, millions of shekels transferred to Shetrit made him change his mind. Moreover, he even worked to increase the project's building percentages, helping the entrepreneurs save millions of shekels as part of his role as city engineer.
"Shetrit, in unrestrained greed, took a bribe while committing money laundering, forgery and fraud offenses," the National Fraud Unit said in its request to keep the man in custody. The police added that Shetrit "abused his office and worked to advance interests which are completely against the law.
The bribery funds were allegedly received in cash and valuables for the private architects' office he owned at the time. In exchange, he issued fictitious invoices, violating the anti-money laundering law. Upon his arrest, his bank accounts were frozen under a court order and documents from his term as city engineer were confiscated. He is suspected of taking a bribe, money laundering, falsifying documents, false registration, fraud and breach of trust.
It should be noted that Shetrit was placed in the 48th spot in Kadima's list for the 17th Knesset. This fact, however, has not been linked to the new affair so far. Olmert said before the 2006 elections that "Mr. Uri Shetrit was added to the Kadima list due to his traits and experience."
Judge 'astonished by monster'
All of the suspects' remand was extended by eight days, apart from Messer, who will remain in custody six more days. Although the investigation has only just began, Judge Heiman, who has been involved in the affair for a while after the investigators asked him to sign different injunctions related to the probe, used harsh words to explain his decision and slammed the Holyland project.
"A person travelling on Jerusalem's Begin Road, after reaching Golomb Street, looks to the right and sees the monsters which are strong enough to make the city look ugly, and stares at them in astonishment," the judge wrote in his ruling. "Anyone living in Jerusalem knows what this means."
Justice Heiman expressed his full support for the police's stand and approved the requested custody days.
