The end of the war This photo shows a ‘mushroom cloud’ over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The ‘cloud’ was caused by the detonation of the first atomic bomb there in August 1945. Around 140,000 people lost their lives in this single explosion. The Allies wanted to force Japan to surrender by using this new weapon. Japan only surrendered after America dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. With Japan’s surrender the Second World War was truly over. Germany and Italy had already surrendered. Never before in history had so many countries and so many people taken part in a single war. People in Africa, Asia and South America were also involved in the war, because many of these nations were colonies of European countries. Soldiers from many colonies fought in the war. |
