Report: Lebanon will bar Gaza flotilla from leaving

A group of female activists is preparing a ship full of women, called the Mariam, which is scheduled to leave Lebanon for Gaza in the coming days. Or maybe not.

The Israeli government has already warned the United Nations that it will use "all necessary force" to stop the ship. Israel has also linked the ship to Hizballah, but the group denied any connection to the flotilla in a statement released Friday.

"Hizbullah confirms that it decided from the very beginning to stay away from this humanitarian act in terms of organization, logistic support and participation so as not to give the Israeli enemy any pretext to attack the participants," it said in a statement.

Nonetheless, Hizballah's leadership poked fun at Israel's concern about the boat, saying it was proof of "the immense fear the Zionists are living in."

The Israel-Hizballah sniping might be a moot point. Al-Hayat reported this morning (????) that the Lebanese government may not allow the ship to leave port -- because it hasn't filed the required paperwork, and because it's illegal for Lebanese vessels to set sail for Israel. From Al-Hayat:

Sources said... the flotilla organizers "may ask to sail to a legal port, and then change course in the sea." But official sources told Al-Hayat that Lebanon would not stand idly by in such a case, when Lebanese civilians and foreigners are exposed to danger in international waters.

Of course, all of this is a distraction from the real question: Will Haifa Wehbe be on the ship? She reportedly asked to join the flotilla last week, but the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah (which, admittedly, often makes things up) said Hizballah barred her from participating (????) because her "nudity and indecency" would "divert attention from the main objective of the trip."

(Personally, I'd pay far more attention to the flotilla if she was on board...)
