Under the rules, swimmers – including non-Muslims – are barred from entering the pool in normal swimming attire.
Instead they are told that they must comply with the "modest" code of dress required by Islamic custom, with women covered from the neck to the ankles and men, who swim separately, covered from the navel to the knees.
The phenomenon runs counter to developments in France, where last week a woman was evicted from a public pool for wearing a burkini – the headscarf, tunic and trouser outfit which allows Muslim women to preserve their modesty in the water.
Thirty soldiers severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan invited to Israeli Embassy in Washington in appreciation of their actions against terror. Troops, their families accompanied by IDF officers Yitzhak Benhorin
The injured troops, who are hospitalized at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, arrived at the Israeli Embassy building in Washington accompanied by their family members. Each of the soldiers – whether arriving in a wheelchair, on crutches or on his own two feet – was greeted by an Israeli officer who escorted him throughout the event, which also included dinner.
"The connection was real. The meeting was moving and heartwarming," Brigadier General Ronen Dan, the Israel Air Forces' attaché in Washington, told Ynet. "I admit I was skeptic, but I left with a good feeling. We come from a different battlefield, but we all fight terror, we all have injured and we share the same values.
"These are precious people with a lot of unpleasant injuries. They seemed amazed by our gesture. We had a feeling they were thanking us from the bottom of their hearts," added Dan, who delivered a speech during the event.
The American soldiers shared their experiences during the event and listened to the battle stories of their Israeli counterparts. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren told the American troops about his three children's IDF service and how one of them was injured while arresting wanted Palestinians in the territories.
Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the rehabilitation of Americans wounded in war has been active for 100 years. It has treated some 150,000 US troops and has rehabilitated the most serious injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The hospital organizes visits in Washington restaurants and foreign embassies for its most severely wounded patients. The decision to invite the injured to the Israeli Embassy was made last year, in honor of the American soldiers' contribution to the war on terror.

| An Iranian court has postponed the trial of seven detained Baha'i believers accused of spying for Israel and insulting sanctities, the ISNA news agency reported on Monday.
The trial, which had been due to start on Tuesday, was postponed at the request of defence lawyers, ISNA said, citing the public relations office of the Revolutionary Court, which handles security cases. The news agency did not say whether a new date had been set. (Reuters) |
Whether the defendants' attorneys are available will not hinder the start of the trial because other attorney's can be appointed, said Hassan Haddad, the deputy of security affairs for the Prosecutor's Office in Tehran, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
The Tehran-based Defenders of Human Rights Center, founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, took up the case of the seven Baha'is last year.
Attorneys Abdolfattah Soltani, left, and Shirin Ebadi, shown in Tehran in 2004.
Ebadi, the other attorney representing the seven, was on a speaking tour when Soltani was arrested and has not returned to Iran.
In their stead, two other attorneys at Defenders of Human Rights Center have taken up the case of the two women and five men detained, Ebadi said.
Soltani had an opportunity to leave prison, but under conditions he chose not to accept, Ebadi said. Along with not giving any interviews after his release, Soltani would also have to end his work with the human rights center and no longer support Ebadi. "Mr. Soltani is completely innocent," she said.
The Baha'is are accused of spying for Israel, spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic and committing religious offenses. The Baha'i International Community, which has a delegation to the United Nations, denies the allegations.
"In the files, in the case basically, there is nothing, no reason that basically convicts them so they have to be released," Ebadi said.
Kit Bigelow, director of external affairs at the American Baha'i Community, said the evidence against the defendants includes communication from Israel, but Bigelow said that is because the Baha'i World Center has its headquarters in Israel. Those communications, she said, is what prosecutors are calling espionage.
Human rights groups have demanded the release of the prisoners, saying the Islamic government has targeted the seven for their religious beliefs.
The Baha'i faith originated in 19th-century Persia, and while modern-day Iran does not recognize it, the government denies any mistreatment of the members of the largest non-Muslim religious minority.
The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, however, has reported an intensified persecution of Baha'is in recent years, including cemetery desecration, arbitrary detention, home raids, property confiscation, work expulsion and denial of basic civil rights.
The case of the seven Baha'is has drawn global attention. Roxana Saberi, the Iranian-American journalist freed from Evin prison earlier this year, spoke on their behalf, as have Human Rights Watch and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent bipartisan federal commission.
The defendants face the death penalty if convicted of the charges against them.
Six of the defendants were arrested in May 2008 at their Tehran homes, and one was arrested in the eastern city of Mashad in March 2008, said Diane Ala'i, the Baha'i International Community's representative to the United Nations. The defendants were held under solitary confinement for the first five months of their incarceration, she said.
The investigation into the charges against the prisoners concluded months ago and the trial was initially scheduled to start in July, but Iran has continued to hold them in Evin prison without access to their lawyers and with minimal contact with their families, Ala'i said.

A RADICAL Islamic cleric blew himself up in the Gaza Strip yesterday after a shootout with security forces in which 28 people were killed and 150 injured.
Abdul-Latif Moussa was the head of a group inspired by Al-Qaeda in the southern town of Rafah, near the Egyptian border. He defied Hamas, the Islamic party that has controlled Gaza since it seized power in 2007, during a sermon at Friday prayers by declaring Rafah an “Islamic emirate” where even stricter theocratic rule would apply.
This was a direct challenge to the authority of Hamas, which ordered the mosque to be stormed. Residents of the town, which is still sealed off, described a night of terrifying violence. Flares lit up the night sky as Hamas machinegun fire and rocket-propelled grenades slammed into the mosque.
Moussa, a doctor as well as a cleric, died after a negotiator was sent at dawn yesterday to agree terms of surrender. Moussa was wearing a suicide vest and blew up both himself and the mediator, according to witnesses. Among the dead were three children and six Hamas security men.
Taher al-Nono, a Hamas spokesman, said: “We hold Moussa and his followers fully responsible for what happened because of his hasty declaration during Friday prayers of a so-called Islamic emirate.”
Tensions have been rising in Gaza since the Israeli offensive in December and January. Groups such as Moussa’s Jund Ansar Allah (Soldiers of the Companions of God) are inspired by Al-Qaeda and want to launch more direct attacks on Israel. The clashes reflect the frustration of many younger Gaza residents at what they see as the soft approach of their leaders towards Israel. Hamas hopes for international acceptance and the lifting of the Israeli embargo, which has crippled the impoverished territory.
“I’m certain that once the long-awaited American peace plan is launched, more and more militants will leave Hamas to join Al-Qaeda-linked groups,” said Matti Steinberg, an Israeli expert on terrorism.
Hamas confirmed that among the dead was Abu-Jibril Shimali, one of its leading commanders, whom Israel says orchestrated the capture three years ago of Sergeant Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier still being held by Hamas.

A Hafla is a Middle Eastern Dance party, and everyone enjoys a party right? So have a Hafla! It can be held in someone's living room, around a campfire in the woods or maybe a private room in a restaurant, as long as there is Middle Eastern Dance, Music and Food. You might have a theme, such as scenes along the banks of the Nile, a Desert Oasis, a Sultan's Harem, an ancient Temple or maybe a Nomad's camp. You can decorate the space simply, with veils, rugs and potted plants. Feel free to ask the guests to bring something to add to the ambiance. It's the enjoyment of the participants that should be the focus. Shared experience builds a sense of community, and it's the gathering together of people that creates shared experience.

Abu Lahab was Muhammad's uncle, cursed in the Qur'an: "Perish the hands of the Father of Flame [Abu Lahab]! Perish he! No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains! Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame! His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood as fuel! A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!" (111:1-5)
Abu Jahl was another man whom Muhammad considered an enemy. Abu Jahl’s crime? One of his Muslim murderers explained: “I have been informed that he abuses Allah’s Apostle.” When he heard about the murder, Muhammad was concerned not with it, but merely with the proper distribution of the spoils: “Allah’s Apostle asked, ‘Which of you has killed him?’ Each of them said, ‘I have killed him.’ Allah’s Apostle asked, ‘Have you cleaned your swords?’ They said, ‘No.’ He then looked at their swords and said, ‘No doubt, you both have killed him and the spoils of the deceased will be given to Mu’adh bin ‘Amr bin Al-Jamuh,’” who was one of the murderers. Ynet British Times quotes defense sources as saying Tehran has moved ballistic missiles into launch positions following reported large-scale IAF exercise. Former Mossad chief says Israel has only one year to stop Iran from developing nuclear bomb

One-upping chicken soup, 50 rabbis and Jewish mystics have taken to the skies over Israel in a bid to keep the H1N1 swine flu virus at bay, according to news accounts.
In a plane flight Monday, the group chanted prayers from the Kabbalah and blew shofars, the ceremonial ram horns, while circling Israel.
One rabbi told the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper that the flight aimed "to stop the pandemic so people will stop dying from it. We are certain that, thanks to the prayer, the danger is already behind us."
Five Israelis have died so far out of the more than 2,000 cases reported nationwide.
Because Judaism considers pigs unclean and forbids eating pork, Israelis usually call the flu "H1N1."
Earlier this year, the deputy health minister tried unsuccessfully to get the bug's common name changed. Because Judaism considers pigs unclean, he wanted H1N1 to be called "Mexican flu" because of where it was initially detected.
No Pigs Allowed !
Following resignation of Druze officer Brigadier-General Imad Fares over traffic accident scandal, prominent Religious Zionism rules, 'Maimonides said explicitly – only Jews in the IDF.' Druze are loyal soldiers, he adds, but should do national service instead Kobi Nahshoni

Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, a prominent rabbi in the Religious Zionism movement, ruled that according to the Halacha (Jewish Law), non-Jews – "not just officers, but also soldiers" – have no place serving in the IDF.
| Arab-Jewish Relations | ||||||
|
He based his religious ruling on a statement made by Maimonides: "A person who is Jewish is connected to the nation. A person who is not Jewish does not have a connection like that of the Jew."
Rabbi Aviner addressed the issue in a recorded rabbinical discussion published on the website Maale after visitors to the site brought up the scandal in which Brig.-Gen. Fares is embroiled. The website visitors asked the rabbi what the halachic viewpoint is on non-Jewish serving in high-ranking positions in the IDF.
"The Rambam (Maimonides) says explicitly – only Jews in the IDF," responded the rabbi. "It is not the proper order that non-Jews serve in the army."
He explained that though Druze serving in the military are loyal to the State and dedicate their lives to it, "questions of this sort cannot be decided upon in an individual, inductive, or limited manner. The question is all-inclusive: Are there or aren't there non-Jews in the IDF?"
Rabbi Aviner said that alternative positions should be granted to non-Jews: "National service is most certainly allowed and obligatory."
The rabbi emphasized that his halachic ruling is not meant "to disrespect the great appreciation or the recognition of the good of all the non-Jewish soldiers who dedicate their lives to the IDF and are even killed (in service)."
He added, "Of course, we won't come and change the structure of the IDF, but a question was asked in principle. Such is the answer, and the answer is clear."
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court has turned down a challenge to the Defense Department policy forbidding gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, granting a request by the Obama administration.
The court said Monday that it will not hear an appeal from former Army Capt. James Pietrangelo II, who was dismissed under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
The federal appeals court in Boston earlier threw out a lawsuit filed by Pietrangelo and 11 other veterans. He was the only member of that group who asked the high court to rule that the Clinton-era policy is unconstitutional.
